Firebird

Small "how to" install Firebird on new Slackware server 13.1:

1. First download the latest sources:
root@kdserver:~# wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird/files/2.1.3-Release/Firebird-2.1.3.18185-0.tar.bz2/download
2. Unzip: bunzip2 Firebird-2.1.3.18185-0.tar.bz2
3. Untar: bunzip2 Firebird-2.1.3.18185-0.tar.bz2
4. Configure:
root@kdserver:~/Firebird-2.1.3.18185-0# ./configure
5. Now it is time to compile, it will take a minute or two: make
6. After successful build, we install Firebird: make install

7. Please check if installation process was successful:
cat /etc/services
...
gds_db 3050/tcp # Firebird SQL Database Remote Protocol

8. Test database connectivity:
root@master:~# cd /usr/local/firebird/bin/
root@master:/usr/local/firebird/bin# ./isql -user sysdba -password masterkey
Use CONNECT or CREATE DATABASE to specify a database
Database:  localhost:employee.fdb, User: sysdba
SQL> connect localhost:employee.fdb;
Database:  localhost:employee.fdb, User: sysdba
SQL> select * from sales;select * from sales;
....
